If you are here you are probably like I was when I first got diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I scoured the internet searching for help to end my pain and fatigue. I know the severity. I know how it seems like nothing in your body is working the way it should. You can't move, you can't sleep, you can't enjoy anything. You wonder how long you will be able to take it and yet you get up another day and try again.
The truth is I don't know what causes fibromyalgia but I do know that there are things that helped me to get my life back, and I know there are others who have also stumbled upon things that worked for them. The problem is that not many people find the answers or they are just happy to solve one part of the equation and they are willing to settle on all of the rest. Some people are just happy to find pain relief, some people are just happy to be able to sleep, others like myself want a return to health. The health they had before they got fibromyalgia. That is why I started this site. I have found the things that gave me my health back and it wasn't any one thing, it was a system of tackling individual problems that eventually paid off in a return to health for me and I discovered them not by thinking of a cure for my fibromyalgia but wishing that if I could just take away one of the symptoms it would be a relief.
When I got better I was so overjoyed and I knew that there were so many other people suffering just like me that I wanted to spread the word. I joined fibro groups and message boards all to no avail because the minute you talk about something that worked for you you get kicked off the sites as a spammer, and these sites claimed that they wanted to help people! That is when I decided to create fibrosmart.com. I collected the articles that I found which started my journey back to health and added even more.
So, what did I do to regain my health?
1. My first goal was to help my IBS. This was something I had off and on before my fibromyalgia. It just got worse after. I began taking probiotics. I took a formula with at least five or six of the beneficial bacteria that you need for good intestinal health. Now I believe the more strains of good bacteria you can get the better and in the market today there are better formulas than when I first started. The very first day my shoulder pain in my left side went away. I was amazed because I suffered with intense shoulder pain for over two years. Now I am going to insert a warning, certain people should not take probiotics. Those whose immune system is compromised should not. Those undergoing any kind of transplant should not. You must talk to your doctor if you even think this could apply to you. I believe everyone should take probiotics even if they don't have IBS. They strengthen your immune system, they promote good digestion and good intestinal health and no nutrients can be absorbed by your system and heal you without optimum intestinal health. 2. Detox made me feel better. I began taking Niacin after reading that it helped those with arthritis. Not the no flush kind. It helped my stiffness a lot but later I read that it was also good for removing toxins from the body. Again certain people should not take niacin. Talk to your doctor. I always felt that I had a toxic build up in my body because I thought that if I am so stiff and in so much pain how can any blood even be flowing well enough to remove toxins and once I tried products to detox I felt much better. Now I take either Chlorella or Cellfood for detox. They work great. I only detox occasionally now but I do take the Cellfood everyday. First timers should start with Chlorella though.
3. The best discovery for me was systemic enzymes for pain. The proteolytic enzymes and the serrapeptides work the best. You can find the specific enzymes to look for in the articles on this site about systemic enzymes. The best spectrums are also in Vitabase Systemic Enzyme Blend and Serrazimes. It took 3 full months but eventually all of my pain went away. Again I was still taking the probiotics along with them everyday. I can't even tell you the joy I felt when I could move again and it was wonderful being able to sleep without tossing and turning all night long because everything hurt. The only people who should not take systemic enzymes are those on blood thinners. Systemic enzymes also take care of mold, viruses, and yeast. 4. Good Multi Vitamin and Cellfood for Fatigue. The only remaining problem I had was with fatigue. I began to take a very good multi-vitamin everyday with high doses of the B vitamins especially. Vitamins from the department store just aren't good enough. I also take Cellfood for energy everyday and also to detox. It is like a miracle. I take Vitabase Lifes Essentials or Vita Complete so I can't recommend another brand because I have never used another top brand. Some people recommend mangosteen for energy.
5. Natural sleep medicine. I take a good homeopathic formula to sleep. There are no side effects for me and you don't wake up feeling groggy or worse the next day. You don't need any more chemicals affecting your brain if the theory is true that fibromyalgia affects your hypothalamus. I actually found that taking Ambien increased my pain, on the days I didn't take it I woke up with much less pain so I stopped that altogether. I use Calms Forte Natural Sleep Aid.
These are the top 5 treatments that I use to treat my fibromyalgia. Some people may need other supplements to address additional problems that often go along with fibromyalgia like weight gain or hormonal help.
I sometimes take other things like progesterone cream to balance my hormones.
I stay away from sugar and flour and as much soy as I can. There comes a point where you must realize that flour and especially sugar are poisoning your system when you have fibromyalgia. You can not metabolize it properly and it contributes to or causes more than half of your symptoms.
I use Dr. Gott's No Flour, No Sugar Diet six days a week. If I must use sugar in my one cup of coffee or tea a day I use Agave Nectar. You can also use Stevia.
I also try to stay away from processed foods. I never ate that much but it is just as easy to make food from scratch and add your own herbs, cheese or spices as it is to just buy a box with a bunch of chemicals.
I try to keep my body ph alkaline. I would recommend reading the PH Miracle. For keeping my body alkaline I use Super Greens, they are very good for healing too and they make your skin look great. I drink a lot of water. I also think fiber is a good idea but try to find one that binds with toxins and removes them, a fiber like oatmeal is good for this.
I swim for exercise, it was the only thing I could do that didn't hurt but now I do all of the things I did before I ever got fibro and I still do a lot of swimming because it gives all of my body a workout. I also do yoga occasionally.
Why do I think these things work? If you read the articles in this site you will learn a lot about fibromyalgia.You will see in the causes section that all of the theories as to causes actually point to a low immune system or a system that seems to have short circuited and loses the inability to utilize nutrients or remove toxins. You will also see many links to toxic build up. Studies have shown that a large percentage of fibro patients have IBS. They are also deficient in a lot of vitamins and minerals. You can't even begin to heal if your intestines aren't working properly. You can't begin to heal or create energy without the ability to utilize nutrients and you can't begin to heal without sleep. The truth is once you read these articles you will begin to see the bigger picture of a body that is unable to heal for whatever reason. What is it when you take three days to recover from anything but an inability to heal? What is it when you eat sugar and the next day you have a flare but an inability to metabolize? In my opinion all of the symptoms from fibromyalgia come from an inability to heal. You may notice sores or dry patches of skin that never get better no matter what you do when you have fibromyalgia, it is proof that your body is not able to heal for some reason.
I believe that once your immune system is compromised everything else is just a cascading effect. You can't create energy, you can't get rid of toxins. You can't heal. Other things like yeast, viruses, bacteria, and allergies become opportunistic and then they generate even more problems. Once you have begun this cascading affect your body gets overtaxed and then your adrenal system and endocrine system begin to fail and since your endocrine system is responsible for so many functions the inability to recover gets even worse.
In the articles section covering treatments you will learn that they all share a common link in helping your body to heal, treat IBS, replace nutrients, reduce pain, remove toxins, and help you sleep. And when I read about doctors with fibro who took systemic enzymes that was proof enough for me to try them. I believe it is in doing all of these things and not just one that truly leads to wellness. There were times when I just took vitamins or other supplements (thousands of dollars worth!), it didn't work, there were times when I just took things for pain, it might've helped the pain a little but it didn't help anything else. It wasn't until I began to do everything together on a daily basis that these things began to work. They are the easiest most cost effective way to deal with all of the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
I really believe this system is just about giving your body everything that it needs to heal. We may never know what causes fibromyalgia but in my opinion you have to treat it just like you would any other illness and that is just to take optimal care of your body and give it what it needs to get better and once it starts getting that help you will begin to heal. It is what your body does naturally. It may take a long time, and the longer you have had fibromyalgia the longer it may take but there is really no other solution than to take control of your own health and begin to try and regain your health.
I don't know if my system will help everyone but I know from researching for hundreds of hours and after spending thousands of dollars on medical care and alternative therapies that I have found the five best things that work for me. I also know they have worked for others.
